Named after a province in the south east of Norway, Telemarking is a form of skiing that owes more to practicality than to sport. Like the cross-country version the telemark ski has a free binding at the heel and a pivot on the toe. This allows the user to take forward steps in comfort and when combined with removable shark-skins on the bottom of the skis gives the user the ability to climb mountains as well as ski down them. In this virtuoso demonstration we observe dedicated revivalist, Mr Bernard Martin practicing his art. His companion, Miss Annika Caswell, evokes the age of pre-war feminism. An era when women challenged the high European peaks in elegant and functional dress, as depicted by actress and filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl in the German movie Storm Over Mont Blanc (1930).
