Mister Freedom: A Cowboy Movie

Perhaps Men’s File’s most spectacular and best produced recreation of the America of the 1950s and 60s is Matt Hind’s joint production with Christophe Loiron of the legendary, Hollywood based Mister Freedom. A sincere homage to some of the more psychological movies that used the West as a literal and metaphorical stage on which directors like Kazan, Huston and even Peter Bogdanovich (think The Last Picture Show) constructed their theatre of the outdoors. Painted with broad brush strokes in hues of red, ochre, sand-yellow and indigo, Hind finds the light and the people – for what is any movie if not a mixture of those two elements? – and places them just where they should be before Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moment and the shutter opens and closed. All at 125th of a second.

Issue 08 of Men’s File was back in 2013, however, the quality of Mister Freedom’s output continues to be amongst the best in the world and some of the basics seen here are still available. Also, a big thank you to the talented Miss @bambury.cross for enhancing this story with her finely tuned personal style.
