For die-hard vintage VW Bus enthusiasts, the annual event in So Cal known as Big Wednesday: Skip Work and Surf, may be as close as they’ll ever come to achieving total aircooled nirvana. Over the past decade and a half, the gathering has consistently been held on the 2nd Wednesday of every August, when the infamous dirt parking lot at San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente California gets overrun with a mind blowing collection of VW Buses. Far from being an uptight car show, most, if not all of the machines are seen getting put to use for their intended purposes of camping, surfing, grilling and chilling. The event began as a casual mid-week surf day for local VW aficionados, and has evolved to attract aircooled devotees from around the globe. Beginning on Tuesday evening, the narrow road leading into San O’ begins to fill in with throngs of VW Buses, all in various stages of restoration and/or decay. Sprinkled throughout the cheerful lineup, you’ll also find Beetles, Squarebacks, Fastbacks, Notchbacks, Ghias, and a Thing or two. Come for the epic display of gritty VWs and stay for some world-class longboarding waves and free hotdogs.
