1958 Lancia Appia, Second Series

Photography: Nick Clements

Named after one of the great roads that emanated from Rome like the tentacles of an octopus, the Appia was quick on those long Roman straight sections and nimble in the corners. The last in the line that started in 1929 to have the sliding pillar front suspension, the car was equipped with the standard Turin factory V4 in a 1098cc form producing 48bhp. This was not a racing machine, but considered a real ‘driver’s car’ in its day. The example pictured here is currently owned by Mr Silvio Donna, who resides in the foothills of the Dolomites. This particular shoot appeared in issue 19 of Men’s File and featured Italian tailoring guru and photographer Lyle Roblin – seen here wearing a suit by Italian retro brand Connection Knitwear, original period hat by Stetson and glasses by Kirk Originals. Mr Silvio Donna, a collector and citizen of the mountain town of Biella, supplied the cars and evocative locations for this story. Also present is the ownership document required in Italy to retain the fabled historic black numberplate.
