On the Links

Men’s and ladies plus 6s and men’s 1920s biker sweater, by Oldfield Clothing. All other clothing, period originals from Blighty Militaria.

George Bernard Shaw’s observation that an Englishman excels on the links but fails in government perhaps tells us more about golf’s association with the upper classes than the skill of the English on the fairways. However, in the age of equality, the greens of England have a wider appeal and have not been ignored by those interested in mid-century style either. In the attractive narrative laid before you, Men’s File has employed the services of Simon and Jamie Delaney of Blighty Militaria for styling and Joe Oldfield of Oldfield Clothing to advise on golfing protocols. An instructor at one of the country’s most authentic links courses (the ‘links’ being an area between land and sea), Mr Oldfield and his team (which includes his wife and other director, Paul), produces a range of sportswear based on original garments from the 1920s to the 1950s. Naturally, Joe has quite a swing and finds the natural fibres and timeless designs actually allow him, and other players, greater movement and temperature control than modern apparel when caught in the rough. The landscape, a re-bodied 1933 Rolls Royce, a 1938 Ariel and Blighty Militaria’s collection of original clothing all served to make this story quite unique in the history of Men’s File. Fore!
